“We’re here to put a dent in the universe. Otherwise why else even be here?” – Steve Jobs
Two days back I finally watched the movie ‘Jobs’ where Ashton Kutcher is playing the role of inventor, entrepreneur, and former CEO of Apple – Steve Jobs. What a great man he was! I can’t help but also admire Kutcher for his marvelous acting in portraying Jobs!
While it is often said that Jobs wasn’t the nicest of guys, he played a significant role in some giant steps for technology, and he was a wise visionary I must say. I have been reading about him since then and my admiration for this man has only increased. I thought I’ll share with you some (actually quite many 😛 ) amazing lines from movie which are either his direct quotes or compilations of his quotes.
Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.
Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it. And like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on.
I think if you do something and it turns out pretty good, then you should go do something else wonderful, not dwell on it for too long. Just figure out what’s next.
You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something – your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.
Things don’t have to change the world to be important.
Details matter, it’s worth waiting to get it right.
That’s been one of my mantras — focus and simplicity. Simple can be harder than complex. You have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple. But it’s worth it in the end because once you get there, you can move mountains.
Sometimes life is going to hit you in the head with a brick. Don’t lose faith.
Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.
Deciding what not to do is as important as deciding what to do.
Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while.
Here’s to the crazy ones — the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes. The ones who see things differently — they’re not fond of rules. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things. They push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.
We don’t get a chance to do that many things, and every one should be really excellent. Because this is our life. Life is brief, and then you die, you know? And we’ve all chosen to do this with our lives. So it better be damn good. It better be worth it.
The greatest artists like Dylan, Picasso and Newton risked failure. And if we want to be great, we’ve got to risk it too. You’ve got to be willing to crash and burn. If you’re afraid of failing, you won’t get very far.
If you want to live your life in a creative way, as an artist, you have to not look back too much. You have to be willing to take whatever you’ve done and whoever you were and throw them away.
How does somebody know what they want if they haven’t even seen it?
When you grow up you tend to get told that the world is the way it is and your life is just to live your life and try not to bash into the walls too much…that’s a very limited life. Life can be much broader once you discover one simple fact—everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you…shake off this erroneous notion that life is there and you’re just going to live in it versus make your mark upon it. Once you learn that, you will never be the same again. Don’t just live a life; build one.
We’ve got to make the small things unforgettable.
It [what you choose to do] has got to be something that you’re passionate about because otherwise you won’t have the perseverance to see it through.
Let’s go invent tomorrow instead of worrying about what happened yesterday.
In your life you only get to do so many things and right now we’ve chosen to do this, so let’s make it great.
🙂
Haven’t seen the movie, but he definitely was a quotable guy

What can I say? I am inspired. I was nodding my head at every quote. It’s hard but if I had to choose a favourite it Is “Let’s go invent tomorrow instead of worrying about what happened yesterday.” Save the best quote until last.

Don’t wanna demean this movie in any way. But do watch pirates of the Silicon Valley for the right story and better portrayal of Steve. I prefer that movie over this anyway.
And nice article too. 😊😊☺☺

Thank you! I’ll definitely watch ‘Pirates of the Silicon Valley’ 🙂 Btw does it portray Steve as the ‘bad guy’ or something?

No no. It’s a bang on depiction of his character. Don’t worry I am a big fan of Steve and his work too, in fact I am replying you via an iPhone. 😜😜
Only thing is that the movie was made in 2000 so story ends there but his character portrayal is better than Astons in jobs and the beat part is that Steve confirmed it while he was alive himself. 👍👍👍

Steve confirmed it..it couldn’t get better! I’m certainly gonna watch it soon, and I’ll remember to let you know. 😀
